Meet Maddie Yu, a senior majoring in Earth, Society, and Environmental Sustainability with a minor in the Sustainability, Energy, and Environment Fellows Program. Additionally, she is a member of the Engagement iCAP team for the 2023-24 academic year.
Yu’s involvement with the Engagement team began with a quick online search. She first learned about the iCAP teams while she was looking at course listings and decided to read more about the Illinois Climate Action Plan on iSEE’s website. After researching the different teams, she reached out to iSEE Senior Academic Instructor/Advisor Eric Green for more information, who then connected her with Associate Director for Campus Sustainability Jennifer Fratterigo. Yu was quickly able to express her interest and become involved.
She enjoys working with people directly and promoting environmental education and sustainability at the external level. Yu has also worked to develop her environmental science communication and interpretation skills, and for these reasons, she knew that the Engagement team would be a perfect fit for her.
Yu hopes to continue developing transferable professional skills in science communication. She intends to complete her graduation this spring and aims to gain a better understanding of whether she wants to pursue further work in public engagement, research, or find a balance between these options. Through her experiences as an iCAP member, she hopes to learn more about collaborative efforts to achieve environmental goals.
In her free time, Yu likes to bake, crochet, and read. She is also currently raising and training a future mobility service dog, and the two enjoy going on short hikes during weekends.
