Meet Shreya Mahajan: Pushing for a Zero Waste Campus and Increased Recycling

Shreya Mahajan is a junior completing a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and a new member of iSEE’s Zero Waste iCAP team.

Mahajan is also a Waste Management Intern at Facilities & Services. Through this position, she works with F&S and iSEE staff members such as Morgan White and Meredith Moore, who then invited her to join the team.

Her involvement with the Zero Waste team began as she started learning more about where our waste goes when it doesn’t get recycled properly. Upon understanding the impact this waste has on the environment, she decided that she wanted to help make a difference.

Her favorite aspect of working with the iCAP teams is being able to work with a group of like-minded people who all share the same goals for waste diversion, waste reduction, and recycling. Mahajan is also excited to hear everyone’s opinions and ideas for various sustainability initiatives on campus. Through her work with this team, she hopes to move toward making the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign a zero-waste campus and increase the rate of recycling through educational outreach to students.

In her free time, Mahajan loves going to the lake and paddle-boarding. She also enjoys going on hikes, especially during the summertime.
