This University of Illinois Center for African Studies Brown Bag Session features the Soybean Innovation Lab’s Director Dr. Peter Goldsmith discussing the role of soybean as a technology for development. Soybean, as a commercial, non-native, and non-staple crop, represents significant opportunities and challenges for smallholder farmers in Africa. This talk will delve into actual farmer practices to better understand how they grow this new crop, their level of success, and potential for sustained adoption. The talk will provide an avenue for discussion as to what makes soybean an appropriate crop for development, and how best to utilize soybean to assist small farmers in emerging from poverty traps. This session will be held on the campus of the University of Illinois in the International Studies Building and streamed live online through GoToWebinar.
